Are you ready to provide your love and care to a homeless cat, kitten, dog, or puppy? If so, becoming a pet foster parent may be for you!

Please contact a rep from Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV), the California-based “Model Shelter” offering quality adoptions, affordable care, and educational programs, who can talk to you on how (and why) to become a pet foster parent!

1) What is fostering? Fostering means to provide temporary homes for cats, kittens, dogs or puppies until they can be placed in permanent loving homes.

2) How does fostering help?

  • You’ll be helping these furry friends find permanent loving homes by providing a quieter, more controlled space for feeding / gaining weight / weaning / healing / become more socialized / become less stressed.
  • You’ll also be helping HSSV save more animals by extending our reach beyond our physical address, while allowing us to open up space in our shelter for new animals that might need it!

3) Why should you foster? Because you love animals and they love you! You’ll also be able to do a real time “test run” to see if full-time adoption is for you. Plus, HSSV will provide all supplies, which includes food, leashes, collars, and toys!

4) Which animals are in most need of fostering at HSSV? HSSV’s current highest need is for foster parents willing to open up their homes to underage kittens (under 8 weeks old).

5) How to become a pet foster parent at HSSV:

  • Step #1: Decide whether you would like to foster a cat or dog.
  • Step #2: Register as a new volunteer at
  • Step #3: Complete our 45-minute online foster onboarding.
  • Step #4: You will then be added to our active foster list where the foster team will reach out when we have foster needs — which might even happen right away!
  • BONUS: You will also be invited to an optional in-person “Yappy Hour” or “Meow Mixer,” where you can meet staff, volunteer mentors, and potentially take foster kittens / cats / puppies / dogs home the same day!
