California Service Corps Recruiting for 2,200 Paid Positions Across Bay Area

The California Service Corps announces recruitment for 10,000 statewide positions — including more than 2,200 in the Bay Area — as Oakland youth showcase hands-on service projects at Youth Employment Partnership.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Today, Josh Fryday, Governor’s Office of Service and Community Engagement (GO-Serve) Director and California Chief Service Officer, joined the Youth Employment Partnership to highlight how Oakland youth are making a difference through hands-on service in their communities and to announce the recruitment of 2,200 paid California Service Corps positions across the Bay Area.

The event offered an inside look at service in action, with young people engaging in meaningful dialogue followed by leading projects such as preparing meals, working in community gardens and supporting local beautification efforts while showcasing how service is building skills, confidence and career pathways.

Across the state, 10,000 California Service Corps members are being recruited to support communities by taking environmental action, tutoring and mentoring students, responding to disasters, tackling food insecurity and connecting vulnerable Californians to critical resources and services.

“We’re calling on Californians to join up, lend a hand and step out into the community. We see and feel the difference when California Service Corps members are on the ground and engaging with their communities — making a lasting impact on our state,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “More than ever, California is committed to investing in the next generation of emerging leaders and ensuring their path towards success.”

Building on this momentum, California is also launching the California Men’s Service Challenge to encourage more men to step up and serve through the California Service Corps and partner organizations.

“The California Service Corps has become a powerful force for good. We have built a statewide army of Californians lifting up their communities while gaining experience, skills, connection and purpose. Today, we continue to call on a new generation of Californians to lead, solve problems and launch careers through service,” said GO-Serve Director Josh Fryday.

The California Service Corps is the largest service force in the nation, consisting of four paid service programs:

Combined, it is a force larger than the Peace Corps and is often mobilized when Californians are in need.

“The California Service Corps is creating paid pathways for our youth to gain experience, support their neighbors and tackle some of our most urgent challenges,” said Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee. “Expanding these opportunities in the Bay Area means more Oaklanders can access meaningful work and grow their confidence. This program is a great way for us to invest in the next generation while strengthening our communities today.”

California Service Corps members participate in service projects, including building and painting planter boxes, prepping community meals and painting a tiny home, in Oakland.

From strengthening local schools to supporting disaster recovery efforts, California Service Corps members are helping address California’s most pressing challenges while building pathways to careers.

“At Youth Employment Partnership, Oakland youth gain work experience, vocational skills and education that prepare them for a healthy and self-sufficient adulthood. Through service, they are preparing for community,” said Michele Clark, Director of the Youth Employment Partnership. “Youth lead stream and park clean-ups, prepare meals for unhoused neighbors and build planter boxes filled with plants they grow in our greenhouse. Service connects them to their neighbors, builds bonds of care and instills confidence in a better future built by Oakland youth.”
